 Synopsis:

From the sun and surf of Whirleygig Beach to the Jenolan Caves youngsters from eight to twelve will become totally enmeshed in a world of spells and sorcery, of good and evil; and all set in a well known Aussie location. By stealing Dawn Margaret's childhood and imprisoning it in a silver locket worn around his neck, Izzevil is using up a part of her young life every day. The race begins to overpower him before he escapes thru the Portal to Other Worlds.

Ernie, Kimbles, Tiger, Annabelle and Gannangura embark on a frightening journey with terrifying goannas and crocodiles; and the Wednesday Night Ghost Walk with deception, cheating and sabotage from the students of the Dark Arts.

A war between the real ghosts and the pretend ghosts breaks out; and ends in a terrifying fight with magic war clubs. Amidst all the bloodshed, Ernie snatches the locket from Izzevil and escapes down a narrow opening, ahead of a massive cave-in.

Not knowing if Izzevil is dead or alive, the group arrive back at the camp just in time to hurry to the beach and compete in the 'Jenolan Cup Flyathon.' The Cup is sabotaged from start to finish, beginning with the a surf carnival at Whirleygig Beach, followed by a long distance swim to Wamberella Beach, then a surf-ski race to where their magic broomsticks are waiting. The air is soon alive with students riding broomsticks, magic carpets and flying didgeridoos; and Cocky screeching overhead as he guides his friends over the Blue Mountains to a secret short-cut thru the Hidden Valley to the Jenolan Caves.

Back at SCOS the cup is awarded with much ceremony to a triumphant winner. Ernie hands the locket containing her childhood to Dawn Margaret who astounds everyone with an unbelievable, awesome mind-blowing announcement.

To cater for the bemused foreign reader, an Aussie glossary is included.
